VR Controlled Robots
Robots you operate from inside a virtual-reality headset. See through the robot's eyes in stereo 3D, move your hands and the robot's arms follow — full immersive teleoperation for places people shouldn't, or can't, go.
KD-VRC pairs a physical robot with a VR headset and hand controllers to create true telepresence. The robot's stereo cameras stream a live 3D view to your eyes; head movement pans the robot's gaze; your hand motions map onto its manipulators. You don't drive the robot — you inhabit it.
This collapses the distance between operator and task. Delicate manipulation in a hazardous cell, intervention inside a contaminated zone, or remote assistance across a country all become as intuitive as reaching out and grabbing something, because that is exactly what you do. Haptic feedback returns grip force and contact to your hands, closing the loop.
Where full autonomy is risky or not yet trusted, VR control is the bridge: a human's judgement and dexterity, delivered remotely and safely. The same rig supports shared autonomy — let the robot handle steady motions while you take over for the tricky moment.
Stereo first-person view
Two cameras feed a true 3D image to the headset, so depth and scale feel natural — not a flat screen.
Hand-to-arm mapping
Controllers (or hand tracking) drive the robot's manipulators 1:1; reach, turn and grip as if the arms were yours.
Haptic feedback
Grip force and contact are returned to your hands, so you feel when the robot touches and holds an object.
Head-coupled gaze
Look around and the robot's head follows your view, giving an instinctive sense of presence.
Shared autonomy
Hand off repetitive motion to the robot and take direct control only for the precise or unexpected steps.
Low-latency link
Tuned video and control pipeline keeps the loop responsive enough for fine manipulation.
| Headset support | Standard PC-VR & standalone headsets |
|---|---|
| Robot view | Stereo cameras, head-coupled pan/tilt |
| Manipulation | 6–7 DoF arm(s), 1:1 hand mapping |
| Feedback | Force/haptic to controllers |
| Control mode | Direct, assisted, or shared autonomy |
| Link latency | Optimized motion-to-photon pipeline |
| Network | LAN / private 5G / internet (VPN) |
| Safety | Workspace limits, e-stop, dead-man |
- Hazardous-material and nuclear cell intervention
- Remote maintenance and repair across distant sites
- Tele-surgery research and skilled remote manipulation
- Training and simulation for robot operators
- Bomb disposal and emergency response standoff tasks
Don the headset
Put on the VR headset and pick up the controllers. The robot's stereo view fills your field of vision in 3D.
Calibrate
A quick pose-match aligns your hands with the robot's arms and sets the safe workspace boundaries.
Operate
Move naturally — reach, grasp, turn. The robot mirrors you, and haptics return what it feels back to your hands.
Hand off
Switch to shared autonomy for steady or repetitive motion, then take direct control again the instant you need to.
